Fall at the ranch: October is when Crooked River Ranch is at its most dramatic. The canyon walls catch the low afternoon sun and glow orange and amber from around 4pm until sunset. If you're considering a move to the area, October is genuinely the best month to come visit — the light on the rimrock is something you have to see in person to understand why people choose to live here.

Beyond the Events — Fall in Central Oregon

The events are just the calendar. What actually makes fall worth living through in Central Oregon is everything in between — the hikes that are finally cool enough to enjoy after summer, the fly fishing season hitting its peak, and the landscape doing things it doesn't do any other time of year.

Smith Rock State Park (15 min) — September and October are the best months to hike Misery Ridge. The canyon is shaded in the morning, temperatures are manageable, and you'll have the trails largely to yourself. Go on a weekday and it feels like a private park.

Ochoco Mountains (35 min) — The ponderosa pines and high meadows turn gold in late October and early November. Almost nobody goes there from out of town. If you live at Copper Ridge you're 35 minutes from one of the most underrated fall color drives in Oregon.

Deschutes and Crooked River fly fishing — Fall is peak season for rainbow and brown trout. The rivers cool down, the fish get active, and the summer recreational pressure is completely gone. Multiple Deschutes River access points are within 20-40 minutes of the park.

Mt. Bachelor (55 min) — The ski resort typically opens in November, which means fall is the window when you have the last of the good hiking weather and the first ski days arriving simultaneously. If you're based at Copper Ridge you can drive up for opening weekend and be back before dinner.
